The purpose of Wingfield Station 1947 is to:

1. Provide year round public access to the Grade 2 Star historic railway station of Wingfield which is the last surviving North Midland Railway station building, the finest surviving work of architect Francis Edward Thompson and which is now recognised by Historic England as the oldest, completely original railway station building in the World

2. Provide a community amenity for events, exhibitions and talks about local heritage, history, traditions, culture and crafts

3. Provide a friendly and welcoming space for local residents to visit and volunteer

4. Maintain, operate and develop the station site using local volunteers. The site comprises the main station building, goods shed, goods dock, goods yard, station approach road and 3 acres of adjacent woodland

5. Develop the station gardens and woodland as a wildlife corridor by creation of new biodiverse habitats

After negotiations, we signed a 5-year lease with Derbyshire Historic Buildings Trust, and formally commenced operation on 1 September 2024.
